BUILT TO COMMUNICATE...DESIGNED TO WIN

WHO IS CHRIS KILIAN?

Chris Kilian is the architect behind ensembles that refuse to blend in.

With nearly four decades in the marching arts, he operates at the intersection of design, education, and adjudication—bringing a level of clarity, demand, and precision that most programs never reach on their own. His work isn’t about participation. It’s about transformation.

Chris began his career as a performer in the marching arts in 1991 and pursued studies in music theory and composition. But it didn’t take long for his path to shift from performer to designer—being recruited to arrange for competitive programs while still in college.

He went on to spend 14 seasons with the Bushwackers Drum & Bugle Corps as a brass performer before taking the podium as drum major for a decade. His leadership left a permanent mark on the organization, earning him induction into the Bushwackers Hall of Fame in 2009. Today, he continues to shape its future as Chairman of the Hall of Fame.

For nearly 30 years, Chris has worked with marching bands and drum corps across the country—designing shows, building performers, and demanding a higher standard. His experience spans ensembles at every level, including arranging roles with Fusion Core and Windsor Regiment, and adjudicating across multiple circuits since 2011.

That judging perspective isn’t a footnote—it’s a weapon. Chris understands exactly how shows are evaluated, where they break, and what separates good from undeniable. He brings that lens into every rehearsal, every rep, and every decision.

Recent work includes contributing to Big Spring High School’s Cavalcade of Bands Liberty A Conference Championship as the battery caption head —proving that the standard doesn’t change, regardless of caption.

Chris Kilian isn’t just here to make your group “better.” He identifies what’s not working—and rebuilds it into something that wins, communicates, and leaves an impact.

MY APPROACH

I DON’T BELIEVE IN SAFE DESIGN

Too many programs spend a season trapped between watered-down writing and disconnected design. Students are asked to perform material that doesn’t fit, or worse, they are never pushed at all.

That’s not growth.

I believe students gain confidence by doing hard things well. That means music and design should be written to meet the group where it is, then challenge it to rise.

It also means collaboration matters. I do not enjoy creating in a vacuum and handing over a product with no real connection to the people teaching it. The strongest programs happen when directors, staff, and designers are aligned.

  • I value collaboration over ego
  • I tailor writing to real ensemble needs
  • I care about teachability as much as impact
  • I believe challenge builds confidence
  • I believe the best shows communicate before they impress

When the design clicks, students feel it. They perform taller. They play with more conviction. They connect to the product, to each other, and to the audience. That is the point.

"WHO" AND "HOW"

WHO I WORK WITH

I work with programs of all sizes, ability levels, and instrumentation situations, including:

  • High school marching bands
  • Concert bands and wind ensembles
  • Drum corps and independent ensembles
  • Directors looking for full design support
  • Staff teams needing a collaborative arranger/designer
  • Programs rebuilding identity or raising expectations
  • Programs dealing with instrumentation challenges

You do not need perfect numbers or a powerhouse program to build something meaningful. You need the right design decisions.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Initial Conversation
We talk about your ensemble, your goals, your personnel, your timeline, and what kind of support you need.

2. Planning & Concept Development
We define the scope of the project and shape the creative direction.

3. Design & Delivery
I begin building the music, show structure, instructional material, or clinic plan based on your needs.

4. Collaboration & Revision
We refine as needed and make sure the final product works for your students, your staff, and your season.

5. Performance & Growth
The final goal is not just a delivered product. It is a stronger program and a better performer experience.

READY TO BUILD SOMETHING STRONGER?

If your program is ready for music, design, and instruction with more clarity, more challenge, and more purpose, let’s talk.
